According to the announcement from the jury of the international competition “Colorama Award 2021”, the first prize of this year’s competition was awarded to Vo Thi Thu Hang - a Master’s student of the Intake 5, majoring in Applied Fine Arts of the Faculty of Industrial Fine Arts, Ton Duc Thang University.
Colorama Award is a competition for innovation and creativity in fashion design, organized every October by Filmar (Italy). This award is an initiative of Filmar to inspire fashion students to develop creative ideas, introduce new trends in textures and seasonal colors from environmentally friendly fabrics.
The First Prize Winner of “Colorama Award 2021” is awarded 2000 EUR along with an opportunity to commercialize the winning designs.
With the theme “Inclusiveness for Reducing Inequalities”, Thu Hang’s designs have completely conquered the “Colorama Award 2021” jury - including prestigious designers and creative directors in Italy. Through the outfits for men and women in Spring/Summer 2022, Thu Hang desires to convey a message of humanity in an uncertain world like today.
“The world will gradually recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the earth has also reached its limit. So what is necessary for the development of the world at the present? In my opinion, it can only be human development. We can join hands to recreate the world where inequality needs to be reduced through bridging the gap between classes, races, and genders. The earth will become a safer and happier place for everyone.
I would like to create a fashion collection inspired by the red dragon fruit - a popular fruit grown in Vietnam. In early 2020, due to the impact of the pandemic, a number of red dragon fruit farmers could not export this product to international markets. In order to help them not go bankrupt and overcome the pandemic, social media influencers in Vietnam have started campaigns to promote red dragon fruit, and some businesses have invented many products using it as raw materials. From the above efforts, red dragon fruit bread was born, which was warmly received by consumers, even creating a fever in the market.
My collection is a suggestion on using the flesh and skin of the red dragon fruit to dye fabrics - a solution to protect the environment, as well as encourage people to wear pink with pride. This is also the idea to create an output for red dragon fruit, the product with a high crop yield in Vietnam every year.”
From the above idea and message, Thu Hang has created a collection using eco-friendly materials and breaking gender-related color standards. There is a fairly high percentage of pink in the primary palette for men, and conversely, blue has a higher percentage in the primary palette for women. To complete her message, Thu Hang put the image of Tlinh- a young emerging artist in Vietnam with messages about gender equality through Rap and Hiphop into the Mood Board.
