VAN MINH THE HIEN, a student of Faculty of Civil Engineering, TDTU 2nd prize winner of Loa Thanh Awards 2017

Loa Thanh Awards are founded and organized annually by The Vietnam Federation of Civil Engineering Associations, the Vietnam Association of Architects, the Ministry of Construction and the Ho Chi Minh CommunistYouth Union. This is a prestigious award for excellent graduation projects of students in the field of construction and architecture. Van Minh The Hien, a student of the Faculty of Engineering, Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) won the second prize of Loa Thanh Awards 2017 with the project “Engineering Workshop Design VS BACKAGING VN”

TDTU: Hi The Hien! Congratulations on winning the second prize of Loa Thanh Awards 2017. What made you decide to participate? How did you feel when you were announced as one of the winners?

The Hien: I heard about Loa Thanh Awards when I was a second-year student searching for creative and academic competitions for students; and I learned more about the competition because students from previous years had won this prestigious award. When I was announced as one of the winners, I was very happy. I immediately informed my parents and teachers. I was overwhelmed with honor and happiness when the result came up to my expectations after a long time of hard work.

TDTU: Could you talk more about your project?

The Hien: The project was undertaken according to the requirements of an actual industrial project. The main thing was to design the heavy load resistant structure (3 billion dongs per square metre) and to put it together with the solution of the combination of beam-beams, beams-columns to achieve the highest efficiency in bearing capacity. The purpose of the project was to propose a new and optimum type of steel structure which can meet the requirements in the design of super-heavy industrial house.

TDTU: What difficulties did you overcome during the project implementation? Who would like to thank for their support during your journey?

The Hien:  This project was made to meet the actual requirements, so there were many new problems one of which was higher technical requirements than traditional ones. Therefore, I had to find many foreign materials for reference, and I had to interact regularly with the instructors for advice.  The duration of the project was short, but the scope of the research was wide. I had to take initiative to evaluate the problems, list the main tasks and allocate reasonable time to solve the problems.

Having achieved the results, I would like to thank my family and Dr. Luu Nguyen Nam Hai for teaching me all the time. He spent a lot of time helping me enthusiastically, so I could complete the project. I would like to thank my friends, Tuan, Kiet, and some junior students, Ngọc, Tánh and Kim who also put their effort into the project’s success.

TDTU: What is your current job? How did your knowledge and skills that you got during the time of studying at TDTU support you in your work?

The Hien: I’m working at ATAD Structural Steel Joint Stock Company. All knowledge I got at TDTU was the stable basis in receiving and developing my work. Moreover, my proper behavior was appreciated. Those were what I got from TDTU environment.

TDTU: What is your life motto? What is your suggestion for the next generation of students who are desiring to be honored at the Loa Awards?

The Hien: My life motto is “Initiative-Optimism-Honesty-Truthfulness”. I would like to say that students should take initiative in their studying, interact more with the teacher to actualize their ideas, actively research to solve practical problems that will support them a lot in their future job.

TDTU: Thank you so much for your sharing. Wish you good health and success in accomplishing your own ambition.
